Check out this site for some very cool videos and pictures of Mountain Biking in North Carolina.

Scott and I were planning on trekking down to North Carolina and camping in the Davidson River Camp ground on Friday and Saturday but the rain is moving in so we scratched those plans. We are going to hit is when the weather eases up.

There are some sweet trails in that area.

Title: Looking for local info about riding in the Brevard, NC area
Post by: SteveGullett on October 12, 2008, 08:26:53 PM
My brother and I are considering a road trip from Lexington, Ky to the Brevard area for a weekend of mountain biking. We are looking at driving Friday Oct 24th and riding on Saturday and maybe Sunday morning then heading back.

We are planning on camping in a campground close to the trails so we can just get up and go.

I’m looking for suggestions for were to camp and what trails to ride.

    Thanks

Then you want to camp at Davidson River. There are some places you can reserve beforehand, and some that are first come first served. Check out this link for more info: http://www.reserveamerica.com/campgroundDetails.do?subTabIndex=0&&contractCode=nrso&parkCode=davi

As for trails you can ride right from the campground, they include: North Slope (starts right from the campground), lower Black Mtn and Sycamore (across the street).

Further up the road turn right onto a gravel road (where the horse stables are), and you can hit Clawhammer to do all of Black Mtn, or Avery Creek, Buckhorn Gap to Squirrel Gap, Buckwheat Knob to Bennett Gap.

Even further up the road (at the fish hatchery), you can go up Davidson River Trail to hit Cove Creek, Butter Gap, Longbranch, Daniel Ridge, Farlow.

Best to pick up a map - the National Geographic one for Pisgah National Forest. It's got all the trails listed and you can see where they are relative to your campsite.

The way the trails work in Pisgah are: climb, climb, climb, climb, when will this end?, climb, climb, it's getting even steeper!, climb, climb, descend. Repeat.

Check out this link for photos and video of some of the best trails in the Brevard area:

Especially check out the video titled Nov Pisgah Trip on this page: http://www.sirbikesalot.com/showfiles.php?sid=8&ci=5&pk=28&tr=1&ft=2
It's got nice clips of Black Mtn, Sycamore and North Slope - the trails that are closest to the campground.

These are great trails. You will love it.

Thanks for the info. This is just what I was looking for.

I've been reading the post and watching the videos on your site for a few weeks. They are the best quality videos that I’ve every seen from the cockpit of a bike. Thanks for sharing the adventures.

Looks like Davidson River is booked full. Looking at the map I see Lake Powhatan Recreation Area/camp ground and they seem to have some spots open. Is that a good plan B or do you have another suggestion for camping with a pop up camper?

North Mills River is another place to try. Davidson River has first come first served spots but you should get there before Friday as they will be filled up by then, especially during peak fall foliage.

There's also some free spots along the forest service road near the White Pines group campground.

Try Cascade lake campground or black forest campground also. Both have electric and water hookups, hot showers. You can google both of them. We will be there all next week if you have any questions??

As of today our plan is to be at Davidson River Thursday evening to claim a first come first serve spot. I talked to the friendly lady at the camp ground and she gave me the lowdown on capacity and what to expect as far as vacancies on Thursday.

Maybe we will run into some of you guys while we are there? Thanks for the info and for helping out.

I got the map, the bike is lubed, the camper is ready, I'm more than ready for a trip and now I see a 70% chance of rain for Friday and Saturday. That sure came out of the blue. The only two days I can pull off and it's going to rain. :(

I would hate to drive 5 hours to camp in the rain and not get to ride any trails.

Are you local guys seeing rain for Friday and Saturday like I see on the internet? Is 70% change in your area a sure thing?

Looks like rain is likely. It says light rain showers, so it would be possible to still ride. There is always a 30% chance of rain in Pisgah. It's a temperate rain forest, so it's rare to go there and not see some rain, despite that the area has been in a drought the past few years.

Here's what your strategy should be: ride as soon as you get there. If you're at Davidson and get there before it gets dark, ride Lower Black Mtn, Sycamore, and Northslope. It won't take longer than a couple hours, but bring your lights just in case. Set up the camper later. Then ride early in the morning before it starts to rain. Do your longest ride then. By the time it starts raining you'll have plenty of miles in and you won't care. Saturday play it by ear if it's raining - you may be able to sneak in a few shorter rides like Longbranch or Cove Creek. If it's raining you can ride Daniel Ridge because that's always wet and sloppy anyway. If you have time Sunday you can get in a two hour ride like Bennett Gap or upper Black Mtn (halfway up Clawhammer). Bennett Gap rocks, literally!
